Prop 8

You knew it was coming.  I wrote about same sex marriage because, well, I married the same sex.

NFL has been grueling.  I could not watch the past 2 Sundays.  It had nothing to do with who was playing who.  I’m a football whore, I will watch almost any game.  Not only do I participate in the office pool (how very valley of me) but I also have a fantasy team.  I can’t take the barrage of Prop 8 ads.  Of course I say VOTE NO on it because there would be nothing more heartbreaking than having my marriage dissolved.  The thought of it makes me sad.

Please, I beg, vote NO on Prop 8.  It has NO effect on teaching in schools, or anything else “public.”  In fact, it is projected to generate hundreds of thousands of dollars for our budget-lacking state.  Will it cost to reverse the 11,000 or so marriages already performed?  Yes.  But that’s not the issue.

Those opposed to it still struggle with the word “marriage” in a religious sense.  For one thing, the Constitution (of California and our great nation) is not faith based.  So religious groups who opposed this need to realize that there is no place for religion (any kind) in politics, and vice versa.  Ooh, that reminds me… how is it that religious organizations are tax exempt?  If church and state are supposedly separate, than what is tax exemption for?  Seems to me that should exempt them from spending any money on ads or mailers stating their political position, right?

Look, we cannot remove the word marriage from our vocabulary.  The right to marry, same sex or not, is law based, not religous based.  Just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean I should not have the same right as a straight couple.  Hey, some don’t agree with abortion, but it’s legal.  Some don’t like wearing helmets when riding motorcycles, but it’s the law.  I could go on and on.  The point it, how those opposed to same sex marriage benefit or lose from gays marrying?  There is no loss, there is no benefit.  So leave it to the gays to decide for themselves.  Let them endure the ups and downs of a legal union.  Sure you think domestic partnership is the same thing, but it’s not.  Try going to a hospital to visit your partner and try explaining your way into the room with a legal partnership.  It’s not fair!

This equates to blacks voting, women voting, interracial marriage, and so on.  Equal rights is the issue.  These bullshit ads from Prop 8 supporters are so far from reality that they resort to leaning on “the children” to push their agenda.  That only tells me that these poor kids, should any of them be gay, will have to overcome their ingorant parents ideals.  Very sad.

So please, PLEASE, vote NO on PROP 8.  I don’t want to get divorced.  I don’t want problems when we have children.  I don’t want a battle if either one of us ever end up in the hospital.  I don’t want estate fights when one of us passes away.

Thank you!
